AND THE WINNER IS .............

Taking into consideration that the winners of the Gross, Net & runner-up trophies are excluded from the Stableford Competition and all of the above are excluded from the Grade competition. The Competition results were split into three grades with all the 36 handicaps in C grade and the rest of the golfers equally split into A & B grades.

Best Gross Trophy - Jack Cooper - Our lowest handicapper and best all round golfer with a gross three game total of 249. Gross Runner-up went to Len Matysek with 267.

Best Net Trophy and winner of the 'Presidents Cup' - Kieran Savage - His three game total net score was 213 and he beat the runner-up Scott Lumsden by the narrowest of margins, one stroke 214, although Kieran only played in three of the four rounds.

Best Stableford Trophy went to Malcolm Tetley with 109 points and the runner-up was David Cameron with 108 points.

A Grade - Jim Catterson & runners-up Kim Gillies & Dan Evans
B Grade - Shane James & runners-up Roger Mack & Ron Tyre
C Grade - Mark Morris & runners-up Haydn Patterson & Gary Lyon

Nearest the Pins Prizes went to Dave Cameron and Kieran Savage at Lanna courses 1 & 2. Dan Evans and Len Matysek at Chiangmai Lamphun. Scott Lumsden and Shane James at Lanna courses 1 & 3. Len Matysek and Dan Evans at Green Valley.

Trophies were also presented to Nigel Jones and Jim Catterson for their 'Holes in One' throughout the year.

General consensus was that it was a well-run competition, a good format and a varied and testing range of golf courses.

Final Round Green Valley 23 August

Once again we were lucky with the weather, just a shower in the middle of the round to cool us down. The course was great, fast greens, lovely fairways and great bunkers (love that sand), Perhaps the second cut was a little long and the light rough a little clingy but all in all a tough challenge for our final round. I think all agree that playing four different courses, and they were all very different, gave everyone a good challenge. The winner today was Shane James with a net 70 and the stableford winners were Kieran Savage and Jack Cooper (again) with 37 points each. Well done everyone, now you can have a guess who the winners are but you will have to wait until Presentation Night this Saturday 6 pm at CK Steak, see you there.

Round 3 Lanna 21 August

Another great day, good weather and excellent golf with some great scores. 23 golfers played net and stableford on courses 1 and 3. Plenty of favourable comments about the good condition of course 3. The winners today were David Cameron 68/41 and Malcolm Tetley 68/40. Plenty of others coming in under Par Archie, Len and Scott among them. Also honourable mentions to a couple of high handicappers Haydn Patterson and Mark Morris who both came in with 36 points. Well done guys. This means that more handicaps will change so I cant stress enough that you check your handicaps before tee-off and check your score cards before signing and handing them in. If you hand in an incorrect or incomplete card it will be disqualified. I have mentioned it before every game and yet sadly, we have had a disqualification on every round, especially disappointing if you have had a good round. Still one round to go and there are plenty of people in with a chance for a prize.

Round 2 CM Lamphun 16 Aug

Round 2 saw 21 keen golfers turn out in overcast conditions with a light sprinkle of rain in the first couple of holes and the accompanying humidity in the middle of the round but with pleasant conditions for the last nine holes. Still no sign of Warren and unfortunate for our first round leader Kieran to have to call in sick but I am sure he will be pleased to hear that most of us found the course a little too tough on the day. The one and only exception was the canny Scotsman Jim Catterson who left all in his wake with a net 69. Malcolm Tetley has got back on the podium with 35 points but everyone else was left considering that this is the round to drop. Jack Cooper was runner-up to both and was left rueing the fact that he had a ten on the tenth, a rare double figure hole for him. Everyone agreed that the course is a lovely course and a great choice for the competition. So the plot thickens and the number in contention grows with each round. The four nearest the pins so far have all been won by different individuals. Would love you all to turn out in yellow (club?) shirts next Tuesday at Lanna for a group photo if possible. Most likely will be courses 1 and 3 (race course) so heads down and keep swinging.

Round 1 Lanna 14 August.

A great day and some great scores for the first round. It was hot yes, but overcast conditions and a slight breeze made it quite pleasant. The Chiang Rai Cup boys, Kieran, Jack and David Cameron have taken a good grip on the competition with net scores of 68 and 69 and stableford scores of 40 and 39 points between the three of them. There were also three other scores at par or under and plenty of point scores over 30. So the game is still on with three rounds to go all on different courses. There were 22 in the comp today with only one no-show Warren Simpson, we also had Joe Ritter, Les Harvey & Gus Guthridge join us socially. Check out the starting line-up for Chiangmai Lamphun in the column on the right (Handicap Order).

Thursday, 9 August 2007

The groups for the first round are now finalised with Roscoe coming in off the sick list but unfortunately Gerry Guetre going out with a bad back. So there are 22 in the competition with two spares. All the courses are booked with tee-off times listed in the posts below, so lets just hope the rains hold off.

Friday, 3 August 2007

The groupings for the first event to be held at Lanna on Tuesday 14th August have been made up from an alphabetical list (a-z first names) of the 22 competitors. As there are three spares who were unsure if they would make the event, I have made the first and last groups three balls - should any of the spares make it they will be added to these groups, if all make it the last group will be a five ball. If any members who are not in the competition wish to play on one or more of the competition days please advise me ASAP (0810328803) and I will include you in the group bookings for the day. Groupings will change for each days event so keep your eye on the web page or check with the starter on arrival at the course. Please also note I have made alterations to the post below relating to times and prices as they become known.

Saturday, 23 June 2007

Each year our annual tournament is held in the month of August and this year will be no different. The tournament is open to members only. It is hoped to make this years tournament the best net score from three out of four rounds of golf on courses chosen by the committee. The winner will be awarded the 'Presidents Cup' as the best golfer for the year. There will be other prizes including runners-up, nearest the pin on par threes, and possibly best stableford points other than the winners of the best net etc.

The four rounds of golf are to be played over two weeks with two rounds being played at Lanna on Tuesdays and two rounds on Thursdays being played at other courses yet to be decided but dependent on price. Our attempts so far to get club discounts have borne little fruit but at the moment it looks like the courses will be Green Valley (B1000) and Chiangmai Lamphun. The Four Members at CML are in possession of four vouchers each for visitors and have agreed to donate them to the club which will enable us to reduce the green fee to a reasonable amount depending on numbers. Most courses are asking for B1200 and we are trying to get it lower than that.

To that end we will require everyone to advise us of their availability in August and their desire to compete or not in the tournament. When we have that we will finalise the dates for August. At the moment it is looking like it will be held between the 14th and 23rd of August.
